NOTICE: Local Option/Sales Tax Language REMOVED from Consideration this Town Meeting
The Charter Review Committee, which included two Selectboard members, two members from the School Board of Trustees, one Library Trustee, Town Clerk, and four members of the public, organized in late 2019 and completed their work after approximately 10 meetings on 10/5/20.
Legal review of the proposal concluded on 12/21/20. The documents were legally posted in accordance to state statute. The committee proposed technical corrections, incorporated statutory references and updated terminology throughout the document.
The Committee had proposed enabling language for future consideration of a 1% local sales/option tax. A public hearing was conducted last night 1/28/21 at 6:00 p.m.
After the conclusion of the Charter Revisions Public Hearing, the Milton Selectboard DECLINED to incorporate Local Option Tax enabling language (below) into the Town Charter:
"2) Local Option Tax
(a) If the Selectboard of the Town of Milton by a majority vote recommends, the voters of the Town may, at an annual or special meeting warned for the purpose, by a majority vote of those present and voting, assess any or all of the following:
(1) a one-percent sales tax;
(2) a one-percent meals and alcoholic beverages tax;
(3) a one-percent rooms tax
(b)Any local option tax assessed under subsection (a) of this section shall be collected and administered and may be rescinded as provided by the general laws of this State.
(c) The Selectboard, by resolution, will determined annually, during the budget building process, the disbursement of revenue collected by this tax."
A second public hearing will be held in mid-February. The remaining proposed revisions will be on the Town Meeting Day ballot - Article VI. If you would like additional information or have questions please feel free to call or email Town Manager Don Turner at dturner@miltonvt.gov or 891-8021.
