Human Rights Day is December 10

This December 10th, we celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the United Nation’s adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UHDR).

The UDHR is a milestone document that proclaims the inalienable rights which everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Available in more than 500 languages, it is the most translated document in the world.

The 2020 theme for Human Rights Day, set by the United Nations General Assembly, is: Recover Better – Stand Up for Human Rights. This year’s theme relates to the COVID-19 pandemic and focuses on the need to build back better by ensuring Human Rights are central to recovery efforts.

The Town of Milton is dedicated to fostering a resilient and just community that creates equal opportunities for all. December 10th is an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of human rights, interconnectedness, and shared humanity.  We will reach our goal to end inequality, exclusion, and discrimination by maintaining steadfast solidarity on a local, national, and global scale.

This Human Rights Day, we are encouraging Milton residents to engage with the United Nations Human Rights Day theme “Recover Better – Stand Up for Human Rights” by hosting an art, poetry, music, or essay collection. We encourage residents to showcase practical or inspirational examples of what it means to them to recover better, foster a resilient and just community, and celebrate the protection of inalienable human rights.

Arts & Essay Collection

Create and email us your entries - art, poetry, music, or essay - by December 9.

On December 10, the Arts & Essay Collection Panel will share and highlight selected entries. Showcase practical or inspirational examples of what it means to you to recover better, foster a resilient and just community, and celebrate the protection of inalienable human rights.
